At the Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC) Ground in Colombo, the opening day of India’s three-day warm-up fixture against a determined Sri Lanka XI provided a proper examination of endurance. While a placid surface and an aggressive opening stand allowed the hosts to dictate terms for major stretches of the morning, a gritty afternoon and evening fightback led by India's spin troika ensured stumps were drawn with the scoreboard reading 363 for 8.

Morning Domination by the Hosts

After Sri Lanka XI won the toss and elected to bat first under warm conditions, the opening pair of Nishan Madushka and Ravindu Rasantha immediately put India’s frontline seamers under pressure.

Madushka came out with clear aggressive intent, racing to a brisk 66 off 65 deliveries with 11 boundaries and a six. At the other end, Rasantha anchored the innings with immense discipline, compiling a composed 71 off 143 balls. The pair punished any loose deliveries, stitching together a century-plus opening stand that took the hosts comfortably to 138 for 1 by lunch, leaving India searching for breakthroughs on a flat track that offered little early assistance.

With vice-captain KL Rahul leading the side in the absence of regular skipper Shubman Gill, who sat out the morning session after picking up a minor blow to his right ring finger during practice, the bowling strategy shifted decisively toward slow bowling as the afternoon session progressed.

Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja provided the breakthrough after lunch, trapping Pasindu Sooriyabandara for 35. From there, the slow bowlers began to find consistent rhythm and variable turn. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar delivered a stellar spell, tying down the batters with immaculate control and finishing as India's pick of the bowlers with 2 for 48. Suthar's dismissal of the well-set Rasantha, beating him in flight to induce a sharp catch, exemplified the disciplined lines required in sub-continental conditions.

Wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav also found his groove as the day wore on, claiming two crucial wickets, including Ahan Wickramasinghe via a top-edged sweep and trapping Anjala Bandara lbw with a skiddy quicker delivery. Pace option Gurnoor Brar chipped in with a well-directed short-ball plan that accounted for Milan Rathnayake, while Jadeja returned to pick up two scalps, wrapping up a busy spell.

Despite a counter-attacking, unbeaten half-century from Sri Lanka XI captain Sonal Dinusha (52), India took the second new ball late in the day to pick up regular scalps and peg the hosts back. When the bails were drawn, Sri Lanka XI stood at 363 for 8.
